Met 1 am. 23rd a fire

was reported at the corner of Praya and Mercer Street I took Sergeant Cameron, and with the aid of Fireman Kerr, and the chinese -Watchmen got the light hand- engine to the spot. A portion of the burning house had fallen - across the street and formed a bar to the waves which broke heavily over the Praya - Where the Engine stood the water was 2 ft deep.

The fire originated at the top of the house and at first the rain and wind prevented it from

spreading, but it afterwards burnt
